When the Honda NSX was unveiled at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show, it was nothing short of a revolution. It offered performance to rival the established competition produced by the likes of Ferrari through intelligent design.

It was the first production car to utilise a lightweight and incredibly strong aluminium monocoque chassis, for example, together with never-before-seen accessibility. It was the supercar for everyday use.

In 2015 there will be a new NSX for a new time, incorporating innovative hybrid technology, intelligent four-wheel drive and performance and efficiency to once again redefine the supercar sector. While the development of the new NSX continues, the NSX Concept-GT racing version will debut in 2014 in the incredible Japanese Super GT championship.

Engine

The NSX Concept-GT is powered by a mid-mounted 2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which is enhanced by a hybrid system offering a performance boost and increased efficiency.

It produces around 550bhp. The road-going NSX will be further advanced by combining a V6 engine with three electric motors – one to supplement power to the rear wheels along with the petrol engine and one each to power the front wheels independently. The system, called Sport Hybrid Super Handling All Wheel Drive, will offer unrivalled agility and security.

Chassis

A carbon fibre central tub and integrated steel rollcage offer unprecedented protection for the driver. Like the race car, the new NSX road car will use a mix of lightweight, high-strength materials for safety and efficiency.

Aerodynamics

NSX Concept-GT generates significant downforce (where airflow is manipulated to push the car onto the surface) for incredible cornering speeds.

The large front splitter and dive planes, and imposing rear spoiler would not be suitable for road use but with the race car will greatly reduce lap times.

Brakes

To comply with racing regulations, the NSX Concept-GT is fitted with large steel brakes. In combination with slick racing tyres and aerodynamic downforce they are incredibly powerful. However, the NSX road car will offer a more advanced braking system with ABS and lightweight and durable carbon ceramic discs. It will also benefit from hybrid regenerative braking.
