The Fjallsjökull glacier in southern Iceland is a natural wonder, with huge ice blocks floating on the lagoon. Its majestic size, towering peaks, other-worldly colours and mysterious glacial glow make me feel small and humble.
Locally known as jökull, the glaciers and ice caps cover as much as 11% of Iceland and impact considerably on the landscape. They also contribute to the country’s economy, with tourists visiting the sites on hiking tours and on snowmobiles. I stand and stare.
The silence is shattered by a boom from deep within the glacier – perhaps nature’s way of reminding me that this gigantic mass is slowly, slowly moving towards me. I take a step back.
