1. The first lawn mower was patented in 1830 by Englishman, Edwin Beard Budding. He got the idea watching a cutting cylinder at a local cloth mill. It took another 10 years for an effective machine to be built.

2. We spend almost two months of our lives lawn-mowing. For the average gardener this means roughly 60 minutes cutting and edging the lawn and this is done on average 2.4 times a month.

3. But many of us hate doing it, or don’t have time. So more and more home-owners are paving or decking over their lawns. A study by the London Wildlife Trust, based on aerial photos of the city taken over a 10-year period, showed 500 “green” gardens disappearing in London each year, the equivalent of two and a half Hyde Parks.
And this isn’t good for us. Green spaces act as lungs, helping to filter the air. They reduce the “heat effect” in big cities, which tend to be six degrees hotter than the surrounding countryside during the summer. Gardens also help prevent urban flooding, because soil soaks up water during storms.

Luckily we’ve come a long way since the first lawn-mower in 1830 and now there is Miimo! It will mow your lawn for you, at a pre-programmed time, and cut the grass up into tiny pieces that are dispersed as fertiliser so you don’t even have to rake up afterwards!

5. Miimo will be kinder to your lawn too! Reluctant gardeners tend to let the grass get very long before they cut it. But when you cut more than a third of the grass blade, the grass goes into shock because you are taking away so much of its food supply. Lawn-mower blades don’t stay sharp either and tear the grass instead of cutting it, damaging the appearance of your lawn.
